Krakauer was an experienced climber who struggled at times with feeling like a fraud for being on a guided expedition relying on guides and the labour of Sherpas. I was shocked to discover that those climbing Everest weren’t all the world’s most amazing athletes but that fit and wealthy people could pay large sums to be guided up the mountain. When I first read this book over 10 years ago, it was the first mountaineering book I had read. He joined a guided expedition led by experienced guide Rob Hall. Krakauer was on the mountain to write a story for Outside magazine on the commercialisation of Everest and also to satisfy his own desire to conquer Everest. Into Thin Air is Krakauer’s deeply personal account of the May 1996 disaster on Mount Everest through his own first hand experience of being on the summit of the mountain at the time and losing members of the expedition he was travelling with. I’m a huge fan of Jon Krakauer’s writing and all of his books – particularly Under the Banner of Heaven, his examination of Mormon Fundamentalism through the lens of an appalling double murder.

Machines Like Me attempts to coalesce both the themes. However, lately his stories have veered towards broader themes, addressing how political and social environment impacts personal life. Ian McEwan is one of our most venerated living writers who garnered eminence for his earlier books Atonement and The Cement Garden in which he explored dark themes and depicted moral ambiguity at its most visceral. Each flaw is harped upon and each quirk is exacerbated. Sedaris writes about the people he loves as though they’re fictional characters. This collection of essays focuses on his family, the one he insists is not dysfunctional, though his depictions of the crew would suggest otherwise. In his insistence of not caring, we see how much he really does. And while Sedaris’ stories can be cringy and examine the often-ignored, his heart bleeds through the words. His squeaky voice is both off-putting and endearing and his refusal to take himself seriously is reminiscent of many comedians. I heard about The Best of Me from a podcast interview of Sedaris. His mastery is in transforming the absurdity and heartbreak of everyday life into a fond memory of simply being alive. The subjects of his jokes are not the topics we think of as inherently funny. They can be picked up and put down whenever the mood suits me. I enjoy essay collections because they don’t require intense attention from chapter to chapter. The last such copy was Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, which inevitably meant I would laugh out loud, which I did, a rarity in my chosen book topics. Usually, the absurd title of his latest collection of essays will grab my attention, and I buy a copy on impulse. I’ve read David Sedaris’ work casually over the years. There is a facility in the middle of nowhere. I am going to have to go through all of his books from the last decade. The last thing I read was 11/22/63 and that was a good few years ago. It has been a LOOOONG time since I read anything by Stephen King, one of the go-to authors of my teenage years. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents-telekinesis and telepathy-who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. The operation takes less than two minutes. In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. In fact, these decorations themselves often came to be known informally as orders. These orders would often retain the notion of being a confraternity, society or other association of members, but some of them were ultimately purely honorific and consisted of a medal decoration. Since the 15th century, orders of chivalry, often as dynastic orders, began to be established in a more courtly fashion that could be created ad hoc. 1099–1291) and paired with medieval concepts of ideals of chivalry. This oneiric vein is extremely beautiful and appears to be inexhaustible. For the author of the diary, who is Mircea Cartarescu himself, as well as for all his fictional selves, dreams are the key opening the door to what lies beyond. In the novel, Morpheus, the god of dreams, appears to get some help from his father Hypnos, thus creating a truly special hypnotic, morphine-like effect in the reader as if the walls of our limiting world have cracked and a door to another world has opened.”Ĭritic Ioana Parvulescu has more: “In my opinion, the most suitable key to understand this book, which may be seen as a poetic and aesthetic manifesto more than Cartarescu’s other works, is the oneiric element, the dreams. The beauty of his attempt is that he does so after having demonstrated to himself that this is an impossible task. She adds: “It is a portrait of the artist as an adult man, when he questions everything, even art and writing, and when he struggles to solve the great riddle of the world. “Solenoid is unique even among Mircea Cartarescu’s works”, wrote the literary critic Ioana Parvulescu in her review of the book. The novel, which was published by Humanitas in 2015 and launched at the Gaudeamus Book Fair last November, has quickly become a cult book, enjoying an equally enthusiastic response from both the public and critics.
